A comprehensive Comres survey of 1000 office workers in the UK has unearthed unexpected findings about office life. One in three Brits wanted to hit a work colleague in the past year, one in three say they flirt with colleagues to ‘make the day pass quicker’ and over 40% admit to surfing the net instead of getting on with work.

Regionally, the survey for National Office Week 2009 (May 11th – 15th) reveals even more stark results:

-         Londoners Want To Hit Co-Workers - 40% of London office workers have ‘felt like hitting a colleague in the past year’ compared with just 16% of people in the South West
-         The Welsh Steal From Their Bosses - In Wales four in 10 people admit to stealing from the office. Whereas only 7% of office workers in the North East say they’ve stolen from their boss.
-         The Scots Surf The Net To Waste Time - The laziest office workers are in Scotland. 80% of staff say they surf the net during the day to waste time.
-         The Over 65’s Are The Most Angry - Over half of the over 65’s who work say they want to hit their younger line-managers.
-         Flirting in the East Mids - Office flirting is a favourite of people working the East Midlands. 44% of workers in the region say they enjoy flirting with colleagues. In Scotland the figure is even higher with almost 6 out of ten saying they flirt with co-workers.

The comprehensive survey, commissioned by National Office Week 2009, also found that since the start of the recession almost a third of office workers ‘can’t see the point in their job’ and a staggering 40% say that office life was better in the 1950’s than it is today.

The findings are published on the first day of National Office Week 2009 (May 11th – 15th) – the annual celebration of office workers in the UK designed to promote a better quality of office life.

Debi Arnold, Director of National Office Week said:

“The UK’s office workers are a really angry bunch right now. Here at National Office Week we want to help everyone who works in an office to relax and enjoy office life which is why we have set up National Office Week.

“The poll results are a timely reminder that office life can be taxing and nationalofficeweek.com endeavours to turn that around with tips, advice and promotional activity created to ensure their office life can be just a little bit more gorgeous, and hopefully make them less likely to flatten a colleague.”
