More Aberdeen buses - past and present
Further to the review of the planned changes that I posted here recently (and to the Scotlandbus group), a few responses were posted. I’ve cut those and sorted them into service number order…
The 6, 11, 15 and 41 do disappear with these changes. The 6 is ironic as two years ago the council considered investing in increasing the frequency to every 15 minutes before opting to invest in route 5 which would surely have saved it. Proposed date of change is March (2008).
Service 13/13A will run every 15 minutes on a Saturday and then every 30 minutes to Dubford and Footdee respectively. Curiously, the map only shows the 13 as following the 14 weekday route (around Footdee, Sea Beach and the Links Retail Park). The 14 follows a different route on a Saturday but there is no mention of this. The 13 will presumably operate Scatterburn-Castle Street evenings and Sundays.
Only every alternative 14 goes to Foresterhill the others pulling off School Road into the Golf Links terminus (which looks set to be renamed the more recognised Seaton). The Foresterhill bus returns via Golf Links though where presumably the layover time will be built in rather than Foresterhill as this would block the bus gate to the 3, 10 and 59. Service 14 will run Kingswells - Seaton - Foresterhill - Golf Links in the evening.
The 14A is still under council tender though worth remembering it was funded by money from Scotoil as part of the terms of planning permission for the beach retail park. I may be wrong but does that money not run out in July 2008?
The 16 will only operate Monday-Saturday daytime with the 16A operating outwith that time as Craigiebuckler via Airyhall as per the current 11.
The 17 will continue to be every 10 minutes to Newhills and every 30 minutes to Dyce, as now.
The 16A (to Airyhall) will be less frequent than the X18 (every 20 minutes, currently every 15 minutes), and will put more pressure on the 19 along Great Western Road. Bluebird are likely to benefit with their improved Royal Deeside services.
Making all (Park & Ride) 41 journeys 40 reverts the service to what existed up to 2003. The 41 loop via (Kingswells) Village only created late running damaging the reliability to the core P&R customers while drivers frequently operated as 40's instead of 41's when running late which only infuriated the village customers. The 15 minute 14 service will offer Kingswells Village a far better service and give better reliability to the 40. (I thought Service 14/15 already served Kingswells Village every 15 minutes during the day anyway?)
There may also be timetable changes (minor?) to the 9, 19 and 20 as only the 5 is reported not to be changing. The Late Night Service will presumable have to be recoloured as the Yellow Line and Orange Line no longer really correspond with the new services.
There is no suggestion of any enhancement to evening and Sunday services. Presumably the 13A, 16 and X18 will not run evenings and Sundays, the 13 terminating short at Castle Street.
Following comments on the Scotlandbus group, consideration is being given to renumbering the X18 to 18 and the swapping the 16 and the 16A round so that 16A is Airyhall and 16 Craigiebuckler. (The number of characters in Craigiebuckler means that a small-ish size of lettering has to be used on the destination displays, and A for Airyhall may be more logical).
Now, a few extra bits which I’ve scanned from old timetables! Service 22/23 swapping around has happened before, in the early 1980’s when the Grampian Scottish network first started. (I know it was 23rd January, but can anyone confirm the year?) The 21 changed to Service 55 in the late 1980’s (1987?), and became Grampian/First Aberdeen16 in Summer 1991.

After deregulation, Northern Scottish (now Stagecoach Bluebird) extended their city network in competition with Grampian Transport (now First Aberdeen). The 51/52 and the Springhill end of Service 55 were withdrawn shortly after Bluebird was acquired by Stagecoach, in Summer 1991. The 51/52 provided some links, which are similar to those which may now be provided by the proposed Service 3 – especially to south of Union Street.
