My time in Scotland – part three – Friday, 16th May 2008

I’d already had a good few days in Dundee, and C had told me that our plans for the weekend had changed. So, Friday was my last day up in Dundee, for a week or two, as I will be back to start moving out in June/July. I’d already arranged to meet Bobby B on Friday morning, and he brought the car through to Dundee in the morning. After stopping for breakfast, I met him in the car. As he only had a half-day (he was doing a charity gig in the evening) I said we could drive to Perth the long way, he’d be a bit closer to home, and I’d have a look around the Fair City before getting the bus back to Dundee.

So, we drove from Dundee up the A923 to Muirhead, then B954 via Newtyle, by-passing Alyth – we were just in front/behind a 57 all the way up), and stopped for a bit in Blairgowrie. He filled up the car with fuel, and he mentioned he’d heard of the Beech Hedge, but never saw it.  Tee hee… that gave me an idea… We drove down the A93 through Carsie to the hedge, and drove around a couple of times before parking the car at the lay-by for pictures. He was in awe at the height of it… this is from the other side of the road, and his car is in the bottom right of the picture.

I guess when you drive around so much, you take these things for granted. Having said that, he was impressed when he saw various bits of Angus back last October. From here, we went back into Blairgowrie, and out the A923 to Dunkeld. The North Car Park is not just a car park, but also the main bus stance for the town… and we arrived just in time. Regular diary readers will be aware of the presence of extra services on this corridor of late, with the Bankfoot Buses Service 22 starting last September, and Stagecoach commencing a Service X27 soon after. First things first, we had a look around Dunkeld town centre, before we walked down to the waterfront of the River Tay. Have a look at these…

(note the bus on the bridge in the third picture – just a co-incidence!)

Anyway, we walked back to the car park… but stayed around a little longer in the warm early afternoon sun. Bankfoot Buses are now using three new Optare Solo’s on their 22 service to Perth, one of which is lettered for the Perth Citybus services (starting on Monday). Stagecoach are largely using Volvo/Alexander PS types on the off-peak X27’s, and this shot shows both.

We left Dunkeld straight down the A9, briefly stopping at Inveralmond, North Muirton and Dunkeld Road, before Bobby dropped me off at Perth Bus Station. I then had a look around the city, bumping into a Bankfoot/Perth Citybus rep with leaflets at Mill Street, and then back to Dundee on the revised 16 service.

In the evening, met up with Gareth C briefly before going out for a few bites for the journey on Saturday. I dusted off a teal jacket (eBay purchase, not yet used, but it now fits!) for the evening, and it looked and fitted well.

You can see all the pictures here.

I like Dunkeld, I have fabulous memories of a picnic disaster whilst there! My mate Suzanne came up from London to visit Edinburgh with me; one of the tourist things we planned to do was go to Dunkeld. My mum and dad took us in the car and we met my sister and brother-in-law there. It all started well and we looked around the Cathedral with my mum doing the history lesson but shortly after, the heavens opened! It was time for lunch and my mum had packed a fabulous picnic for us (it was June/July time and the weather had been gorgeous until that point); we had it in the car park, sitting in the car, with my sis and bro-in-law parked next to us. Every time they wanted some food, they phoned us from their mobile and we wound the windows down to pass it over!

Funny, I have memories of ending up at The Hermitage when I was 10, with some camp that we were staying at... anyway, it rained then too.

As you can see from the pictures though, it doesn't always rain in Dunkeld!
