More transport stuff

suzyscottdotcomOK, it’s almost the weekend, and I think I’ve got time to squeeze in another transport post… four points for now…
1. Firstly, over the border into Cambridge, where the junction at Drummer Street/Emmanuel Road/Parker Street is to be closed from 1900 on Saturday 9th until 0600 on Tuesday 12th February. If you are currently thinking ‘that’s outside the bus station’, then you’d be right. Stagecoach stuff is on their website, and the 18/18A and 26/27 are unaffected. Most other services are being moved, and in short, almost all services will be rerouted to stop at Four Lamps roundabout (the end of Victoria Avenue). Exceptions are citi1 towards Arbury (still at the temp stop outside John Lewis), citi3 towards Fison Road (which will use the temp citi2 stop in St Andrews Street), Services 10/10A/11/12 and 13/13A/X13 which will use a slightly different route to/from the bus station. This includes Park & Ride services, except Trumpington which will retain the stop in Downing Street, but then not serve The Grafton. To cover for this, an enhanced City Circle service will run on an extended route via East Road and Newmarket Road, every 20 minutes on Sunday (usually no service) 0900-1700, and every 10 minutes on Monday & Tuesday (same times).
2. Now, going back to ‘citi2 temporary stop’ once more. Cambridge St Andrews Street is being dug up outside the Post Office/new Grand Central development, as is much of central Cambridge right now. The current stops for citi1 towards Arbury, citi2 towards Milton/Chesterton, 16 & 17 towards Fen Estate/Chesterton, and Park & Ride Red (77) towards Madingley Road, have been moved for almost a fortnight now, and will be so for some time yet. The 1/2/16/17 have been split up, with the 16/17 stopping in Emmanuel Street, and the citi1 stopping at the south end of St Andrews Street outside John Lewis. Service citi2 and the 77 are stopping at a temporary stop, in the middle of the taxi rank. On the second weekday, it was still not clear. The stop outside the Gala Bingo further up in Hobson Street was still in use, despite being advised that it was to close. The bus stop had not been sited. The tax rank markings had not been removed. The only thing to say it was a bus stop was a battered Cambus stop flag, with the number 77 on it – not displayed on the vehicles! Taxi drivers have been moved elsewhere, but quite a few are still parking in the bus stop part of the former taxi rank, and this has lead to double-parking when the bus turns up, naturally blocking the road. Now, there is a new stop flag and timetable, but taxis are still parking in the bus stop!
3. While Stagecoach have been out & about around Cambridge, not just with temp stops, but also updating the Traveline numbers, now that the old 0870 number has been consigned to history. One notable sight around Trumpington is the introduction of a pink-on-white ‘ROUTE 26’ stop flash, in the style of the citi numbered routes, on the bus stop flags. The 26 on black-on-yellow tape have been removed, but the 27 ones are still showing… here’s what I mean…
4. National Express’s new branding was launched this week, with a new identity for coaches, and local buses in Birmingham will be ‘National Express West Midlands’. While the branding has not yet reached c2c (later this year) or one Railway (to become National Express East Anglia) or Dundee (to become National Express Dundee), it’s perhaps bad timing, with the new nationwide English free concession travel scheme starting soon – which specifically excludes National Express (that is, as in the long distance coach services… before we start getting confused… not airports, bus services in the Midlands, bus services in London, trains… etc.)
