Following my previous post, we’d decided on a weekend away (well, Friday night away, as we have an invite out on Sunday), and we settled on Kings Lynn. 52 miles north of Royston by train, and still (just!) within the Network (South East England) Railcard scheme! With hourly trains from Royston taking little over an hour, it was the serious alternative to having Caroline driving for hours!

The 1845 London Kings Cross – Kings Lynn additionally stops at Royston, so it was straight there. The train was delayed a little, as was the one in front, and arrived around 1930. Non-stop to Cambridge, where we got seats, and the train split into two anyway. Caroline…

… so, from Cambridge via all stations i.e. Waterbeach, Ely, Littleport, Downham Market, Watlington, to Kings Lynn station, pulling in a few minutes behind the advertised time of 2033.

With very few ‘chain’ hotels to be found in the area, I turned to laterooms.com (where I found the Bluebell Inn near Barnsley, for a trip a few years back). We’d been quoted a good price (similar t0 that of a chain) for a room at the independent Stuart House Hotel. It’s a ten-minute walk through the park, but in the dark we decided to take a (somewhat smoky) taxi! We checked in to find Room 9 in autumnal shades of green, gold and brown, which seemed to be the hotels house colours.

After a quick reference to the brochure, seemed that I’d somehow managed to save around a third of the price of the room! Interesting… that paid for the train tickets too, as well as (almost!) the bar tab. We went downstairs for a quick one before bed, and on the way back noticed the house cat, stretching out in relaxation. It’s a black & white cat, not on the website, but it gets a photo in the brochure!

So, we started complimenting each other, and went to bed about two hours after we arrived.

(retro-blogged when we got home).
