10 Years Of Success For Bus Enthusiast News Groups
Two popular bus enthusiast groups, the London Bus Group, and the Dundee Area Bus Forum, both celebrate ten years of existence in September 2009.
Back on 20th September 1999, “the Mod” set up the London Bus Group. The group was originally set up to replace an advertising-supported bulletin board on the Anorak London page, which had been taken over from 1st October 1999. The group was an idea to replace the old bulletin board, and use the new e-group potential to reach a wider audience…
… and shortly after, on 24th September 1999, the Dundee Bus Group was set up. This was a similar idea, but set up to keep the moderator in touch with news from home, as a move to London was then in the midst of happening.
In the years that followed, the group providers changed hands, and many things have changed. The London Bus Group continues under new management. The Dundee Bus group now covers a slightly larger area, and is now the Dundee Area Bus Forum. The Forum also has a companion book.
Fly forward to October 2007, and once again, a local news board, the Anglia Bus News Page, was under threat. An offer was made to continue it, as a group. It might have sounded like an odd idea at the time, but the Anglia Bus Forum was born, opening for business on 1st November 2007. Almost two years later, and with the Administrator moved in with partner in North Hertfordshire, the group continues to thrive. The group have just had their second group Meet-Up & Tour in Norfolk, and will soon see the publication of a companion book.
While the Anglia Bus Forum may be just a comparative newbie, their bigger sisters, the Dundee Bus Forum and London Bus Group are both 10 years next month. While many things have changed over time, the groups have stood the test of time, and became a useful source for bus enthusiasts near and far.
Notes
London Bus Group was handed over to “local management”, when “the Mod” was in the midst of returning to Scotland in 2002. London Bus is now currently operated chiefly by Richard Cairns, with assistance from Malc McDonald, Terry Wong Min, Matt Arnold, Paul Dredge & Simon Cooper. The original group was set up on 20th September 1999. The area that this covers was the area bounded by the former London Country Bus Services.
Dundee Bus Group is still in the hands of the Mod, now the Administrator (Suzy Scott), with assistance from Chris Forbes and Graeme Smith. The area covered was originally Dundee City, and the three adjoining areas of Angus, Fife, and Perth & Kinross. From January 2002, the area of the group was expanded, to include The Mearns & Stonehaven of Aberdeenshire, and Dunblane & Kinbuck of Stirling, were added. Since 2005, the group became the Dundee Area Bus Forum.
Anglia Bus Forum was opened on 1st November 2007, by the Administrator (Suzy Scott), with assistance from Martin Chapman and Bob Tarling. Come 2009, the Forum area has been expanded, latterly by popular demand. The areas now covered include the current council areas of Bedford, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Central Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea, Suffolk, and Thurrock.
