In the early hours of Friday 25th July, the hosting company that I use for DundeeAreaBusForum, AngliaBusForum, SuzyScott, ScotBus, Techpark Transport, and the rest of my web stuff (that is NOT HOSTED ELSEWHERE i.e. LiveJournal), will be moved, as part of the host company’s plans of continual improvement.

Service to the Forums should not be affected, but there may be a blip towards the end of the night on Thursday, or early on Friday.

The host’s rack is monitored and managed 24/7/365. The switches used are Cisco, the power distros we use are APC (with remote reboot and monitoring functionality).  In case of any issue they can have a datacenter technician down to the server within 2 minutes. The sites should not (they said will not) be moved again until the server comes out of warranty in approximately 2 years.

Location: Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK
Connection: GigE via BlueConnex
Spec: Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon 5335, 8GB RAM, 2TB on RAID5 (Dell PowerEdge 2950).

Oh yeah, and the previous server is Optimus (on the Transformers theme!) but will now be on a server called Rampage – hence the title!

I’ve had a lot to think about in the last few weeks. Some of these things I honestly never thought I’d see the time come, and mixed feelings and emotions, but I am good overall.

Firstly, pills. As I have mentioned several times before, I have to come off the Duphaston (Dydrogesterone), whether I like it or not, as it’s been discontinued by the manufacturer. So, I’ve started phasing myself off it gently, by cutting some of my remaining stock in half. I will hopefully try other things in time, but I want a clean break first. Lets see if this was really behind some of my feelings, or the Estradiol Valarate instead. I don’t expect to feel hugely different by stopping it in this way.

Secondly, feelings. Since this post, it’s been brought to my attention that Claire died in her sleep peacefully, after a heart attack. Now, no matter how many choice words had to say about me, I don’t think that she deserved to die, not right now, not far from her (45th I think) birthday.

Thirdly, new ventures. I never thought I’d say that the book was finished (see this post) but it is, and in the final stages of checking. I’d like to have it for sale by the end of the month, so keep watching! There are other projects in mind, and I’ve already had C suggesting a complimenting volume for down here… seriously!

Finally, despite the three things above, here is something I thought I’d never say. From the end of September (this Autumn), I’m going to be a student - for the first time since I left school (aside from the NVQ's I got about twelve years ago)! Full-time equivalent in open learning, and starting on a few Level 1 computing units. By the time I get my teeth into it, I can choose which of the qualifications I’d like to put that towards, and then go from there over the coming years.

Now, that will give me stability, something to work towards, and a pattern, as well as a bit more of an existence to my life. So, why this, why now? Well, health is a main thing, so this is flexible, as well as not requiring a daily commute! Caroline is supporting and encouraging me for the longer term, so I see this once again as good. The time frame being just over two months away, gives me time to finally continue with moving out of my current place in Dundee. Educational feelings from the past – well, I wanted to get out of school, move away, and become the person I knew I really was. Now, some things have not changed – I’ve done this. I’m settling in. I’ve got support, and friends on both sides of the border (and the Atlantic!). Now that is all out of the way, who knows?

The previously referred to interview didn’t go as planned, but I’ve managed to top that in fairly spectacular style, don’t you think?

So, what else? We had Caroline’s sister-in-law staying down with us on Thursday night, en route to a meditation weekend in deepest Suffolk. Yesterday I was out and about, will write about that later on.

Additionally, at the weekend, I used iTunes to purchase (the whole album, not just the single) Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (a few of her songs have some wonderful lyrical meanings to me, as previously mentioned here), and some old school stuff too!

It’s been a very busy week of last. I’ve caught up to date with happenings since then. I’m having a good time of it. The intermittent shoulder pain has gone away, the antihistamines are now working (and not making me too sleepy at the same time, now!), and I feel like I could do anything!

So, what happened yesterday? Well, I’ve been working on ‘another project’ on and off for many years – but I finished it the other week, and the first test copy arrived with me yesterday! It’s a book that I’ve compiled and put together – 112 pages and more than 90 images – so it’s a fair read! I’m proof reading with my copy at the moment, and it should be available for sale online in a few weeks. Keep watching this blog for an announcement about it in more detail next week!

Secondly, while not strictly knee-deep in the job market, I was keeping an eye open in adverts. I spotted something in the local rag (same one where I’d seen the phone advert the previous week) that looked of interest – well, two, with the same company. I applied, and got a phone call yesterday, offering me an interview for one of said positions, next Thursday! It’s not in a call centre, it’s not in public transport, it’s not in the prison service, and I have had the confirmation email today. I don’t want to get your hopes up, but keep reading!

So, Friday is good. I’m just waiting for Mr UPS to turn up with the second copy of the book before I dive in the bath – because, as soon as you are there, he’ll turn up! After that, I’ll have a lie-back and relax!

This weekend could potentially be a busy one, and I wanted to go out to one of the transport events this weekend, and ideally, a little bit of shopping too. So, following discussions with Caroline, we’re heading out to the Metroline Potters Bar garage open day tomorrow morning, and stopping at The Galleria at Hatfield on the way home – subject to change!

That way I get the best of both worlds – who said a girl couldn’t have her cake and eat it?

I was approached a few weeks ago by Ville & Transports – a French-based transport industry trade magazine – looking for pictures of buses in Peterborough. They’d written an article, and needed pics, so I agreed, and suggested they chose the ones that they liked the look of from several collections in my Photo Skip. Now, the paper copy of the magazine came today…

As reported by the BBC, Ellen has wasted no time at all!

US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is to marry her partner, actress Portia de Rossi, after California lifted its ban on same-sex ceremonies.

"I am announcing I am getting married," DeGeneres told the audience during a recording of The Ellen DeGeneres Show...

But, she still has the humour, as this quote shows..

DeGeneres joked: "Thank you. I'll tell you who the lucky guy is soon."

Further to my post yesterday about the former Prime Minister being let off with a £24.50 fare on the Heathrow Express, here is the opposite end of the spectrum - a passenger prosecuted for being 20p short on her Oyster card...

The secretary of a London archbishop is being dragged through the courts - for mistakenly falling 20p short on a bendy bus.

Rachel McKenzie, a committed Christian, has told the Evening Standard of her despair at being branded a criminal for the first time at the age of 54.

If convicted, she will be given a criminal record and ordered to pay legal costs and a fine of up to £1,000. One lawyer suggested the case could cost taxpayers up to £5,000.

Ms McKenzie was caught out last November as she boarded a No12 bendy bus from her home in East Dulwich to her workplace in Southwark. She swiped her Oyster card through the reader and, unaware that the machine had beeped because she had insufficient funds, she took her seat. But two stops before the end of a journey a ticket inspector got on, checked her Oyster card and discovered she had just 70p on it - rather than the 90p then needed for the journey.

Mrs McKenzie, who works for the Catholic archbishop of Southwark, told the Standard: "He told me I was 20p short. I was really surprised. I told him it was an innocent mistake, that I had swiped the card next to the driver and he hadn't said anything and that I would pay the difference.

"I reached to get out my purse but he said I couldn't do that and that he had to report me. I thought that would be okay because I'll get the chance to explain it was just a mistake. I never thought it would end up with a criminal prosecution.

"It makes me think it is a ridiculous abuse of the legal system. I made a genuine mistake and was honest about it because I was sure the British legal system was a just one. I wonder about that now."

Ms McKenzie has enlisted the help of lawyers who are fighting her case free. But Transport for London has refused to cave in and she has now received a summons to appear before Sutton magistrates on 22 May.

Her legal adviser, Mark Stephens, said: "It is disgraceful. This prosecution is likely to cost as much as £5,000 to recover 20p. This is a scandalous abuse of the court system. She should have been allowed to pay the difference or, at worst, pay a penalty fare." He added that a criminal conviction could prevent MsMcKenzie working in the community in future or make it difficult to obtain a visa to travel to America.

TfL's legal department wrote to Ms McKenzie last week saying: "Consistent with all cashless services, it is your responsibility to ensure you have sufficient credit in your card to pay for your bus journey."

The TfL enforcement policy says it seeks to be "firm but fair" and aims to ensure prosecution is only considered where there is clear evidence of irregular travel. It also says it will prosecute if the offence occurred "in an area known to occasion high revenue loss".

Driver of sightseeing bus in road rage fight

This is the moment a bus driver exploded with road rage and violently assaulted a motorist while passengers looked on in horror.

It happened in heavy traffic on the Embankment next to Hungerford Bridge in front of dozens of people leaving Embankment Tube station yesterday afternoon.
he tour-bus driver was seen grappling, swinging punches and at one point appearing to try to smash the man's head into a railing. Witnesses told how the driver of the Original London Sightseeing Tour bus got out of his cab to confront a white van driver after an angry and expletive-filled exchange in front of passengers and pedestrians.
One onlooker said: "It was over nothing really. I think the white van cut in front of the bus too soon for his liking. There seemed to be a lot of swearing and the bus driver banging on his windscreen.
"The white van driver got out and went up to the cab. He had his mobile phone and was going to take a picture-Then the bus driver got out and just went crazy. He was definitely the one throwing the punches. He chased the van driver under the bridge and he dropped his phone at one point. I couldn't believe it. There were three tourists sitting on the bus just looking on confused."
According to witnesses, the trouble had started to calm down but reignited after the van driver retrieved his phone and threatened to call the police.
The bus driver - who by then was back in his vehicle - appeared to become enraged again, got out and had a further stand-off with the man by the railings outside Embankment Tube station.
The onlooker said: "It was bumper to bumper traffic in heavy rain and I think it all got to the bus driver. He just snapped. The white van driver looked frightened. He tried to run away, but the bus driver chased him.
"At one point another sightseeing bus pulled up alongside and the driver shouted through his window. He shouted out for them to stop but didn't get out."
Met Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at around 2.40pm to reports a man had allegedly been assaulted." Arriva, the parent company of The Original London Sightseeing Tour, today launched an investigation.
The Arriva spokesman said: "We have not had a complaint from any member of the public or been notified about this by any of our staff, but we take this matter very seriously. We will investigate this fully."

There a selection of pics on the web, but I liked this one... if only to think of what the tourists will be thinking...

From The Ticket Collector comes this rather interesting story... who remembers the time when his wife got pulled up on Thameslink (now First Capital Connect) for not having any money to buy a ticket?

Tony Blair caught without a ticket, and then allowed to travel for free!

Former prime minister Tony Blair was left red-faced when he was caught travelling on a Heathrow Express train on Wednesday without a ticket and said he had no cash to pay the fare.
Blair, who has earned around 500,000 pounds being a speaker at various events since leaving office in June, was confronted by a ticket inspector as he travelled to Heathrow Airport to catch a flight to the United States on Monday.

He claimed he had no cash for the £24.50 pounds fare because money an aide had given him was no longer in his pocket.
Blairs bodyguard offered to pay the ticket, but the inspector said he could travel for free.

Blair’s spokesman was unavailable for comment.
