Cambridgeshire - county of roadworks
May. 27th, 2008 02:05 pmToday’s travels north had to be cut short. Roadworks in Melbourn (two lots), and Harston (lost 40 minutes in the queues here on the way up the A10!) made me miss the connections I was going for, even allowing 35 minutes to changeover (for the roadworks etc.) – and this says nothing of delays in Cambridge city centre and around! Indeed, the bus I was going for left Cambridge 7 minutes late itself, so I missed it by a whisker. Called the Passport Office to ask/advise, and was told another appointment would be phoned to me later in the week.
I went for a bite, before taking some pictures around the building work ongoing in the Cambridge City Centre Core 4 project, as well as the new Service 8 (Waterbeach – Cambridge via Fen Ditton) starting today. I didn’t quite know what to expect for a first day, but the Trident/Presidents are normally to be found on Haverhill routes 13/13A/X13, so 17694 was a surprise!

On the way home, I was looking around when this single-deck Dart/Pointer SLF turned up, and blinded up for Royston 26. Slightly rushed picture as I was getting on it!

Not sure if the driver (from Cambridge depot) was covering for the Royston driver in the circumstances… but anyway, we got held up on the A10 again, spotting traffic going back from Manor Farm to Hauxton Gap northbound, about two miles of traffic!
We then made it to Melbourn and found roadworks at Melbourn Church had sprung back up, and our driver had to leave the bus at the lights and move a traffic cone out the way! Further along in Melbourn near the Technology Centre, stop/go lights on a side street did not delay us, but will probably cause delays later in the day. Then, we got to Royston, with a set of new roadworks outside the new houses in Queens Road. Got back to the flat, after clocking that the bus had arrived 25 minutes late – add that to over 40 minutes lost northbound.
Not a lot that I could do about it… aside from coming home, having a hug from C before she went back to work for the afternoon!
In the meantime, you can see today’s pics from central Cambridge here.
