Following my trip the previous Tuesday around the new network in Peterborough and The Fens, I planned a trip around Huntingdon and St Ives areas.

The plans I had ending up changing several times. After getting the 26 into Cambridge in plenty of time for the 45 to Huntingdon via Bar Hill, St Ives, Wyton and Houghton village at 1035, this bus did not show up… now there had been earlier issues with the A14, but to be fair, all the other buses on the 55 and C5/6 and Whippet services appeared to be running to time, all using the same road.

So, I took the 1100 55 to Huntingdon direct to St Ives and then via Oxmoor, in the hope of salvaging something for the day. I was rather interested to receive a text from a friend stating that the 45 had just past them, leaving St Ives Bus Station for Huntingdon i.e. the one that never turned up at Cambridge!

The 55 seemed to have enough time through St Ives, including a few minutes loading time, but no-where near enough after Hill Rise on the way out of St Ives. As a result, it’s arrival at 1205 was impossible. In fact, as we went through Oxmoor, we were almost running on the times of the 66, due 10 minutes behind. The loading was a normal fairly good load, bearing in mind the Monday market traffic.

After arriving just over 10 minutes late, decided to go the other way instead – seeing a 66 in the stance for St Neots, even though it should have went away earlier. Turns out the driver had been sent out as an “extra” (to cover a missing vehicle) as the 65/66 changes appear to have left the route rather tight for time. From memory, he ended up leaving about 10 minutes down, got into St Neots about 30 minutes down (there are roadworks on the 65 route, but this did not affect us), and there were several bus loads of passengers waiting at the stop for the Huntingdon bus (he did not return, but went away showing “driver training” instead).

After this, decided to return to shopping, so took a PS on the X5 back to Madingley Road before continuing to The Grafton and onto the bus back to Royston.

Didn’t take many photos (due to a mix of changeable weather and lack of interest towards the end), but you can see four I nabbed in St Neots here.
