A week of interesting things
Oct. 10th, 2008 05:15 pmOur warmest regards and kind thanks to everyone who’s replied, PM’d, emailed, texted or phoned us since Wednesday. I’m completely taken aback by the 40+ wishes of goodwill that we’ve had our way since then, and we’ve still not told everyone yet! Caroline has since mentioned in her post to LJ that she’s “still a little gobsmacked!”, but we’re both very happy.
So, the rest of my week, so far...
On Monday morning, I’d gone out “for a few things” (translation: ring shopping, and a pre-hairdo chemical test). As both were a surprise, I couldn’t say anything to C, much as I wanted to. I’d decided originally to put the proposition to Caroline next weekend, when we’re down in the Brighton area, for Suzy’s One Year Post-Op Celebrations... or All The Things You Couldn’t Do, While Stuck In A Hospital Bed In Woodingdean (now you know why I especially wanted to do this!) – but as the last bits and pieces came into play in time, I’d decided to do it this coming Wednesday evening.
Tuesday was too wet and cold to do anything – even with a MegaRider+ and lots of potential, I decided not to get soaked. After all, a sudden case of pneumonia would probably bugger things up quite a bit. The necklaces that I’d ordered was delivered this morning, so that’s more-or-less me ready to go.
Wednesday, and told C I had a few surprises (tee hee!) but all she knew for certain is that I was off to try the once-a-week Service 139 on Wednesday morning. The Cambs CC contract was rewarded to Huntingdon & District before the Stagecoach takeover, now of course known as Stagecoach In The Fens Ltd. This is their only presence in Royston from Huntingdon garage, being a fair distance up an A-road, with the exception of a college run. I was going for the 1115 Royston – Foxton – Duxford – The Shelfords – Foxton service (the middle run). Now, this used to be done all by the same bus and driver, but the driver who did the first run said he wasn’t doing it, someone else was now. That’s new. He phoned up the depot to check where he’d got to, and apparently there’s a new guy out on it lost. Never mind, he came in just over five minutes, with an Olympian – 72 seater double decker overkill for little me! – complete with Cambridge Regional College interior poster with South Park’s Cartman saying “No Pass, No Ride!” for when on CRC contract work. I went upstairs for a rare opportunity to see for miles across the fields and farms. After storming up the A10 to Foxton, I heard a Scottish voice coming from the cab “Excuse me, have you done this run before?”
Turns out he’d not had good instructions (I was shown his sheet!) and was given a show-around the route the previous week, although that driver went the wrong way! Once I’d showed him how to get across the crossroads he was at, and he was soon after well on the way himself. He asked where I was going (I was getting off at Great Shelford), and he promised to get me there in one piece. Once we got to Sawston, he asked how he was doing, and he said “I think I’ve done not too badly” – yes, he’d done it all right and correct! It was, however, over a year since I’d done this route, but we managed to figure it out!
So, Wednesday’s theme appeared to be “patience”. After taking the citi7 from Great Shelford into Cambridge city centre, had a quick browse through the shops, and bumped into ABF members Adam and Jamie, who had managed to get lost while looking for each other, then bumping into me. I had to give my apologies and leave with around 30mins to get to the hair appointment, so I’d left at 1345, taking the citi3 around the corners. Now, I’d allowed two-three hours, in my flexible schedule for this, and turned off my phone. C knew I’d made it to Cambridge, but I said that I would try and pick up a recorded item that had to be taken back to the sorting office, on the way home.
As I was planning on spending a fair bit on the both of us this week, I didn’t have a huge budget to work to. So, when googling for the CRC contract bus services, I also came across a webpage about the Riverside Studios facilities at Cambridge Regional College, city centre campus. To try something different, I said I’d like a full head of highlights, and a general tidy-up of the hair. £31 the lot, not to be sneezed at. I arrived with a few others waiting around, and was called in soon after. I was introduced to the various students who’d be doing the work, and the management (same black uniforms, but “Staff” badges on) who came by every now and then to check things. Quite a detailed conversation while things were going on... that, and the radio on in the background, did help me to relax. I went for a rather natural Ash blonde (9.03, for the hair & beauty people amongst us), in a medium weave pattern. Now, my hair is rather long, and it brought a lot of admirers amongst the students! Seriously, I know it’s been growing a while... and the girl doing most of the highlights had not worked with hair this long before, either there (they have a lacking of customers, for some reason!) or in her outside work.
We went through 48 strips of foil in my hair, and FIVE HOURS end to end, before saying my goodbyes to everyone on the way out. The warming atmosphere was very similar to that of a hospital stay, as if we’d known each other for weeks – not just five hours. The staff member praised her work on the foils, and the packing of the hair.
So, I was planning to come back through the shops in Cambridge, get the 26 back to Royston, make C a curry, and then... you know... but, it was after 1900 hours. So, had to call Caroline, who had been trying to get me a few times. Apologised, and she came into Cambridge. I offered to buy pizza at Domino’s Hills Road instead, and walked down East Road, passing the big hole that’s been developing there, still causing a huge tailback at this time of night! Initially Caroline could not tell the difference in the dark, but she can once I got in the car with the takeaway!
So, we pigged out on the way home, we were both full, and C complimented the fine hair work done. We went home, and we were already tired (this was about an hour and a half later), and I started talking sweet nothings, again. I’d started on the A10 on the way back to Royston, pretty much like I’d done the first day we fell in love – I hoped Caroline wasn’t thinking I was trying to hide anything, or cover for my “disappearance”. I had her on the MagicSofa (TM), and started talking about paperwork getting in the way of love, and then... made my proposition, based on when Caroline gets her GRC.
Looked at her face, and she said “Bloody hell...”
So, I asked for an answer, and she said “Yes, of course”, before we started talking again. See what I was talking about patience? Well, after eighteen and a bit months, with lots of love and support, she’s now my fiancé, and vice-versa!
In addition to the traditional ring, I’d got her a necklace, well one each. I was browsing online, and thought it was most apt – not just because I got us a “heart” necklace shortly after we started seeing each other. Have a look here, the 2nd item, the double Venus symbol in silver.
Thursday morning, and I went out to the dentist – a small filling added at the time, came home as my face was feeling huge! Didn’t wear off until about 30mins before C came home, although I did collect the packet from the Delivery office on the way home. Did make the curry I’d planned for C for the night before.
Friday, and a busy day! I’d picked up my meds on Thursday, but missing the two I wanted to go back onto for some reason. Went to see my doctor this afternoon. In the space of an hour, left the house, went to the docs, saw him, he gave his congrats on our engagement, discussed the meds, put them back on my repeats, did a prescription, counter-signed a copy of my passport page for the OU, prescription handed into chemist next door, did an envelope of forms for the OU while waiting, and then took the bus around to the post office, before coming home. Tired naturally, but happy.
So, it’s been a very busy week – you can see some pics from Monday, and Wednesday/Thursday.
