Now, time to play catch-up!

1.    I mentioned previously the November Travel Dundee service changes. A couple of points that I didn’t pick up then was that the 15 was additionally serving Peebles Drive estate, and the morning journey on the 2A is now operating via the 2 route, additionally to St John’s School. Further to the changes, widespread comments have been in the press – interestingly, some of the residents of Whitfield do like the new service, but quite a few don’t. Oh yeah, and the promised map & guides being door-dropped look like being delayed or not happening, but they are all available from the Travel Centre. Some changes to happen from Sunday 11th January are mostly to coincide with the opening of the new St Paul’s Academy in Gillburn Road the following day, a merger between Lawside Academy and St. Saviour’s High School (the last of the schools I attended to still be in existence – all the others have gone!). This is going to result in changes to the 9A/10A school extras that are currently running for Lawside Academy, and some journeys on the 5 running earlier (and a morning peak journey on the 9X that continues as a 9A will also run a little earlier There will be other changes to the 15/17, 22 group and 28/29, that I’ve not worked out yet. Additionally, three brand new services will be introduced from the same date – TD/NXD Service 17S from Whitfield, Fintry, Claverhouse to St Paul’s, TD/NXD Service 28S from Douglas via Happyhillock, Linlathen, Claverhouse, to St Paul’s, and a Stagecoach Strathtay Service 501 from Monymusk Park via Douglas, Longtown Road, Mid Craigie, Linlathen, Claverhouse, to St Paul’s. Speaking of which…

2.    …following the service changes from Stagecoach Strathtay in August, some changes were forthcoming on Monday 24th November. This mostly affected Montrose, and saw the “new” 33 from Ferryden to Stracathro Hospital withdrawn, as well as the 47 daytime journeys on the Montrose local service (Ferryden – Hillside), which largely consisted of a 20minute Borrowfield shuttle, and extra hourly journeys from Hillside to Ferryden via Brechin Road. Now, the 47 is reintroduced on a two buses an hour service, but running from Ferryden to Hillside, additionally double-running into Coronation Way, replacing the 47A (and latterly 47 Borrowfield shuttle). This takes the Borrowfield – Montrose service level back to the two buses an hour provided from deregulation to the start of the first bus war in 1998. Service 30 is being reintroduced hourly from Montrose to Brechin and Stracathro Hospital, again reverting to the traditional daytime level of service, but with these journeys extended to Arbroath via Inverkeilor, increasing the level of service from Arbroath to Montrose to two buses an hour. Additionally, some changes to the evening journeys in Montrose mean that one bus on the Stagecoach Bluebird 107 from Montrose to Stonehaven (2222 from the station) is running via Borrowfield and Hillside Bridge.

3.    Stagecoach Bluebird’s strike action (after two days) has been held back for a further ballot, but First Aberdeen’s driving staff have now voted in favour of industrial action.

4.    Down south, and TfL first. It looks like the western extension of the Congestion Charging may well be about to be rescinded, by Spring 2010 at the very earliest. “…Although TfL estimates that traffic returning to the Western Extension would result in a small increase in emissions of air pollutants and carbon dioxide, this increase would be unlikely to have any material effect on measured air quality within the Western Extension or on the boundary route because of the number of different factors that affect local air quality. The ongoing investment in technology such as hybrid and hydrogen buses, encouraging the uptake of low-carbon vehicles and fuels, and reducing power consumption on the Underground and Overground are all helping us to tackle transport related emissions across the Capital…”

5.    Essex County Council’s new timetable book has now been published, and is 508 pages of A4, plus the covers! At £1, well worth tracking down a copy, or £3.50 including postage by mail order (yes, in a plain manilla envelope, it just scrapes under the new one kilo weight limit for second class post!)

6.    Following my mention of the new Optare Versa’s for Arriva The Shires on Service 331 (Royston – Hertford), I got a better picture of one this morning – note the lack of a route number, except for a paper window number – still the case! There are three (10.4m long) examples at Ware for the 331, plus two (11.1m long) examples at Harlow for the 59 to Chelmsford.

7.    Still on the subject of Service 331, Hertfordshire County Council are doing a trial of bus stop specific timetable panels, as an alternative to the traditional matrix format used in Herts. I’ve snapped a picture of one here.

8.    In January 2008, Wootten’s Tiger Line T1 will be operating to a revised timetable, with buses running throughout the afternoon, plus earlier in the morning/later in the evening. Watch out for more details.

9.    The first of the Christmas & New Year timetables are being published now (in November, yes I know!) with some still to come. No major surprises, except Stagecoach East appear to be having no X5 this Boxing Day.

10.    New train timetables for the Winter/Spring period are also starting to trickle through, but these start from 14th December 2008. A new paper edition of the TSO-published UK Rail Timetable (with a red cover) will be on sale soon, In the meantime, you may wish to browse the free online PDF here.
