Second Edition – On Sale Now!

After a full 48 hours of editing, plus many hours of typing, compiling, and emailing/writing/checking etc, it’s now completed!

Following the launch of the first edition of the Dundee Area Bus Fleetbook, good support has encouraged me to continue to a second edition. This book contains the current bus fleets of the main local bus services operators in the Dundee Area Bus Forum area. This covers Dundee City, the three adjacent counties of Angus, Fife, Perth & Kinross, as well as adjacent parts of Aberdeenshire (The Mearns & Stonehaven areas only) and Stirling (Dunblane & Kinbuck areas only), and some of the other main fleets.

Following feedback from those who purchased the last one, a few more fleets have been added to this book, from the last edition. In addition, I have put the route information into a standardised block format. I have added details of known ticketing system information, well as adding more space where needed – each operator has at least one page to themselves, to allow space to record subsequent developments.

Additional information has been added for those interested in operations, explaining how to obtain paper copies of timetables, maps, etc. for each local authority area. I have added two additional sections – a Preservation Supplement, and one on Long Distance Services. These have been added to provide additional information, beyond the normal scope of the book. Let me know what you think of the supplement idea – I may vary it with other themes, meaning each supplement may not appear every year.

You may wonder, why the change of name? What was wrong with Fleetbook? Well, when I mentioned it here in my LiveJournal (and elsewhere), friends and relatives were left asking, “What’s a fleetbook?” In the best part of a year that followed, I’d been unable to think of a better name, until shortly before the end, when I thought of Directory. A quick liaison with my partner/fiancé Caroline proved this to make more sense to the average layperson, and was quickly adopted… even though it meant redoing the cover art, and obtaining a new ISSN.

With all the additional information, the book has been renamed to better reflect the content – Dundee Area Bus Directory. The book is now more than 50% bigger – from 116 pages last time, to 184 pages this time! As a result, the price for the paper one has gone from £9 or £10 to £12, and the PDF goes from £4.50 to £6.

The book is intended to give you an idea of what vehicles are around, what they do, and in most cases, what they look like. The fleets in this booklet are intended to be up to date using members reports, and collated by myself, but no promises are made! Where the operator did not supply me with the information, then I have used what was available. This book is intended to supplement other publications, and not to replace them. Proceeds from this book will be used to keep the Forums going, and maintaining them as a free place for bus enthusiasts.

The book contains 184 pages in simple, legible, black-on-white text, with full colour covers. The book contains all details known up to and including Friday 22nd May 2009.
