To bring you up to speed… after a problem with another mail order supplier, I tried to get the birthday & Christmas gifts required for the rest of the year via boots.com instead. Because I’m away on the day that “standard delivery” would be delivered on, I paid extra to upgrade the three-figure order to next day, due on Friday. Friday came, and I got an email saying they’d been despatched at 1548, and still due for delivery (impossible). Three packages were sent out at this point, and according to the courier involved, one of them was out for delivery, by that evening. The other two were meant to be delivered Saturday instead.

Well, we waited, and nothing showed up. I did question with the adviser as to if anyone at DHL would be in to receive the request to deliver Saturday, but apparently this wouldn’t be a problem. They didn’t show. To add insult to injury, boots emailed me to say that I had missed the delivery on Friday evening, and a postcard was left at 1700. I was in then. No postcard was left. From my days at a couple of other couriers, sending packages out with a new or agency driver was an internal trick – even though the driver would get no-where near delivering any of them, at least they could say they tried. Sometimes they didn’t even leave the depot, but were “out for delivery” on the system. F*cking liars.

Anyway, as I was out yesterday, left it all then, until today. I’d given them an extra day of leeway, and nothing happened, so, cancelling was my only option. The thing is, as one of them is now held (see above ‘carded’ trick) pending me to call and grovel with DHL (I no longer use them myself for deliveries, following problems with them and their reseller), not all three might turn up, so I have no sure way of being able to refuse all of them. Refunds aren’t paid until they get all the items returned to them, however long that takes. A “senior associate” then took over the call (at my request) and apologised etc. after I had to explain more. The refund of the previous postage charge is being held by Paypal, but I did manage to get him to call DHL tomorrow, and perhaps process a refund then.

However, I then went through the rigmorole of ringing Paypal. They give you a unique web-based security PIN before you can call them, valid for one hour, then don’t bother asking for it. Long and the short of it was, they cannot give me the exact day that the payment will be taken from me. She was also unsure if I could file for a dispute, seeing as they had partially refunded it. She went away, came back, and decided that I could. I decided to go no further with it, will wait till tomorrow. Based on my experiences with this sale, Paypal seems to take rights away from you (versus paying by credit or debit card) as opposed to giving you any new protection.

F*ck this, we’re off to St Albans this evening, so I might see if we can sweet-talk Caroline into stopping at The Galleria on the way. (There is a shiny new Mac reseller there, I’ve been told).
