You will remember no doubt a few weeks ago, when I posted the original list of service changes.
A few extra bits can now be added to this listing. It looks like Dundee depot are about to have an all-day working on Service 20/20A/20B (Dundee – Forfar – Kirriemuir) with the extra run in the morning (0617 from Dundee Bus Station), and an extended run in the evening. (1911 from Forfar East High Street, opposite St Johns Church).
The Carnoustie changes (see map) will be some of the more significant. A bus every 10 minutes to Dundee is double the current Saturday service, and 50% extra to the current weekday service. Ravensby Road has not seen a bus service since the withdrawal of the Carnoustie town service in the early 90’s, but gains a 20-minute service to Dundee. Queen Street and Newton Road have been tried before, but this is a different route, and they are a lot of new houses being added on route.
Having said that, for everyone who wins, someone else loses out. The section between Arbroath and Carnoustie is reduced from two to one bus an hour – but it is the via Easthaven bus that is withdrawn. The 73 via Muirdrum village (hourly) is retained, plus the doubling of the 39 (via Muidrum by-pass) between Arbroath and Dundee/Invergowrie to retain the Dundee service. The link for Muirdrum village could be retained by diverting the 39 new extra short workings via the village (39B?) and potentially then having the 73 run via Easthaven instead. This would spread the buses a little thinner than the setup that is going to apply. In fact, the locals in Carnoustie & Easthaven have already been writing to the press about the changes.
The evening & Sunday Service 39A will replace the 40 group, with slightly more buses to Montrose. However, there will also be an extra hourly evening & Sunday service to Ninewells Hospital, the Technology Park, and Invergowrie village. Service 73 will also run hourly on Sunday daytimes between Carnoustie & Ninewells Hospital, with some short Sunday morning workings between Dundee City Centre and Ninewells Hospital.
Service 13 will also now be branded as Tayway – rather than X-City Direct – but at least it avoids confusion with the 14, but potentially creates confusion with the rest of the new network! Strathtay’s new network map for the Tayway can be seen here.
The Dundee city services have also already hit the press. This evening’s Evening Telegraph included a bit on a slight typo – now, with the marketing department already under stress, they may wish to forget about this one too…

The timetable with the alternative spelling of Tullideph Road.
As errors go, it’s not up there with Dundee’s Lychee Road, but bus operators Stagecoach got the wheels rolling quickly today in amending a howler in their latest city timetable. But again it’s Lochee that has stumped the compilers when they were drawing up the service number 5 from the city centre to Tulliedelph, or should it be Tullideph Road.
No-one could deny the street name is not the commonest to be found, but according to Stagecoach, the misspelling made it through various stages before appearing in print for the new timetable which starts on August 13.
A spokesperson for the bus company said today an “input error” had gone undetected through the process of registration for the service with the Traffic Commissioners and carried on into the subsequent printed timetable.
“The misspelling of Tullideph Road has now been corrected on the timetable available on our website and the correction will also be picked up when we reprint this timetable.”
(translation - no-one on the Dundee Area Bus Forum noticed the error either... unlike the 69 or the 73...) In reality, how much is that worth for advertising a brand new service? a display advert like that in the same rag would have cost quite a packet... and yes, the correctly spelt-one is now on the company website – here. Shame they never corrected the phone number on the back panel… the Tele missed that one!
Service 5 is to provide a number of frequently asked for links. There are a huge number of student and shared houses in the Brook Street and Milnbank Road areas, and the potential here could be quite large (especially if they can flog the residents students a few UniRiders).
Service 6/6A is another interesting one. The main Service 6 is a mixture of new links, plus the contracted part of Services 137/138/139. Links to Gardner Street are therefore reinstated, lost during Travel Dundee’s changes in June 2005. Service 6A is effectivly the western side of the 71 (or the old 13, pre-summer 2005) replaced, with an extension to Downfield. The roads used for the 6A are slightly different to that used by the 71, but I am told they are close enough. Time will tell if the residents agree with the sentiments. There is also a new two-buses an hour link around parts of Downfield previously devoid of a bus service.
The top end of the country services continue, with one 6A operating a totally different route via Auchterhouse, Tealing and Murroes. Not showing in the Stagecoach 6/6A leaflet are the 1230 from Dundee to Inveraldie/Tealing journey, and the 1600 on Saturday journey from Dundee to Tealing & Auchterhouse. These are still operating, as Service 139, and feature in the relevant Angus Council publications (with one shown incorrectly as a 138 at one point).
The extension of Service 39 is a direct replacement for Service 76 to/from Invergowrie and the Technology Park, but it is worth noting that the 76 has been running this way since the Technology Park opened, 21 years ago. As it will not be long till the 76 is wiped away, here is a reminder from a few years ago. The late Ron Doig hired a Routemaster for a final Strathtay RM commemoration back in 1993, and it was parked at the Technology Park for this picture (taken on the ‘wrong’ side of the road, presumably to allow for the sunlight!) – taken by Donald MacRae, image reused with permission.

Also, finally – one other bit of news. Service 122 (Blairgowrie – Alyth – Glenisla, Auchvan Stables) is up for change. This service has “held on” during every one of the recent service reviews by the council. It’s been tendered for one year only on a number of occasions. The council found strong local support for retaining the service, but also to add an evening service (currently runs two round trips on Wednesdays only), as well as a potential Saturday daytime and evening service. During the retendering, the service was cut back to Alyth (allowing connections to/from Service 57 for Blairgowrie), and also became a demand-responsive service with a semi-fixed route. So, the service will be happening now twice a week – Wenesdays & Saturdays, but the evening service is not happening. If enough use is made of this service, then who knows what may happen.
