I had my phone call earlier from Liz, to do my pre-surgery telephone assessment. This took a little bit longer, because the phone kept cutting out, and the DECT handsets (cordless phones) kept going onto mute… anyway, got there in the end!

I’ve been wondering about the ‘no tight underwear’ thing since last November, when I saw the post on [personal profile] auntysarah’s letter. Well, she explained that it meant no control pants, you know, the extra-tight-tucking-type.

Anyway, brief explanation of what’s going to happen – for those of you who don’t yet know what I have to expect, or had yours some time ago! (If any of the post-ops reading this wish to clarify matters, please do so!) From memory…

Monday 15th October (T-1) – Enter hospital around 1200. Light food only.
Tuesday 16th October (Day Zero) – No food first (six hours), then no liquid four hours before surgery, bowel prep (i.e. an enema) to ensure that I’m completely empty inside. (Still better than picolax, as I’ve had that before!) Taken off to surgery in time for 1630, surgery will last 3-3.5 hours. The surgery will be a penile inversion in my case – that means, remove the testes at the bottom, take the penile tissue, place it back-to-front, and use some of the skin to form the cosmetic bits. The tip remains in place at the top. Of course, I won’t be able to see any of this to begin with, as it will be all packed away. A “pack” will be placed inside to prevent it falling apart inside – it is made from gauze bandage. A catheter will be placed inside me (not for the first time, but totally different from the last). I’m told that [profile] cmmathieson will be waiting for me when I wake up – all going well, of course.
Wednesday 17th October (T+1) – Not a lot.
Thursday 18th October (T+2) Back on liquid diet.
Friday 19th October (T+3) Back on food this day, I understand.
Saturday 20th October (T+4) Quite a lot will be happening, but more than likely all in the early morning. The pack comes out, and a dilator goes in (a thick plastic rod). These are placed in for a set period of time. I will apparently be doing it myself by the end of this day!
Sunday 21st October (T+5) Catheter should be out today (maybe earlier).
Monday 22nd October (T+6) Check all is well. Last night in Sussex, if all has gone to plan.
Tuesday 23rd October (T+7) Discharge from hospital 1000. To avoid any initial DVT style risks from a long journey, I will be staying with Caroline for a bit after the surgery. Then, recovery begins. Dilation continues after leaving hospital, and it involves placing one of the two thick plastic rods inside the new (neo)vagina for (initially) twenty minutes, three times a day (“your Perspex pals”…)

So that, in brief, is what I have to “look forward” to… just so you know (if you didn’t already, that is!)
