Today was a serious bash – although, I do have a longer one planned for the near future!

I walked into Royston town centre, and onto the bus station just after 0900 (the 331 at this time starts only from the bus station on weekdays), and had DAF/Cadet 3832 of Arriva The Shires on Service 331 to Hertford. We filled up well as we got down the route. Yesterday was a bank holiday, so today was the first day of service for the week, as well as market day in Ware. We had a standing load as we pulled into Ware, and left a few moments late, arriving into Hertford bus station a little late too.

The next bus I was going for was a tight connection, but I could see it just in front of us. Mercedes Citaro 3907 on the 724 towards Heathrow. This was another excellent load, and was virtually full, with passengers standing from Hertford to Welwyn Garden City. I alighted at St Albans, St Peters Street, for my first real walkabout in the city. After a few stops and shops (including a “get well soon” card for [profile] thebustocrookes), I boarded Volvo/Wright 3840 on Service 301 to Hemel Hempstead, and went for lunch at Quiznos, for the first time ever! There are still just a handful of these stores in England, and I don’t think they’ve made it to Scotland yet. The main product is a slightly more defined sub-style sandwich, and it was good! I returned to the bus station in plenty time for the half-hourly ‘Line 500’ towards Aylesbury, but it had not yet arrived in from Watford. After a few minutes late, I was beginning to get a bit concerned. When the ‘Line550’ turned up first (they are inter-spaced between Watford and Hemel), I presumed that the 500 had been cut. Wrong – it turned up, just twenty minutes late. It was the mix96 overall advert bus, Trident/ALX400 3840.

This added a bit more stress to the trip, but more was to come. The driver handled the bus rather heavily, especially on the section of diversion around the residential areas of Tring. Just before Tring Cemetery, we were overtaken by the next 500 – yes, on a half-hourly service! – and we were around half an hour late when we got into Aylesbury Bus Station. ABS is undercover and very dark, so no pictures at all.

I did manage to get on the 280 to Oxford, Volvo Olympian/NC 5156, to Oxford New Road. Following previous delays, this left me not long in Oxford – just enough to grab a couple of photos, and something cold and wet for the journey that followed.

The first part of the trip i.e. Royston – Hertford – St Albans – Hemel – Aylesbury – Oxford had been done on an Intalink/Arriva The Shires Explorer for £7.00, and I had prebooked the 1635 X5 from Oxford to Cambridge for £3.00 (plus 50p fee) via Megabus.com. We had Volvo/Plaxton coach 52437 which had a good load, even leaving some passengers behind in Milton Keynes (as we had a full load).

We changed drivers promptly in Bedford, and headed out via similar (but more direct) roads that we went through on Sunday. I got dropped off at Madingley Road Park & Ride site, where Caroline was waiting to pick me up, and drove me back to hers (around 1940 – over twelve and a half hours!). We went via the chip shop, as she was rather hungry!

Today is the last day of my hormone ramp-down. Last Tuesday, I went from 3 x 2mg tabs of estradiol valarate to 2 x 2mg, and today, I went from 2 x 2mg to 1 x 2mg per day. Also today, the dydrogesterone dips down from 1 x 10mg tab to half of a 10mg tab per day (requiring cutting with a sharp knife!).

Next week, Caroline starts a serious diet, and I will be off hormones completely. That will be a “fun” week. Not.

You can see all the pics I took today here.
