My Thursday - out & about!
Nov. 1st, 2007 04:51 pmAfter speaking with Caroline and some texts back/forward to
auntysarah last night, I am assuming that I’ve managed somehow to pick up an infection. These are very common, and you may be surprised it’s taken so long before getting one! For the last few days, I’ve been getting intermittent sweats, and some pains in the surgery area, amongst others. It’s making dilation difficult, and a bit more sore, but last night it passed to a pain when using the loo. The area is very sensitive, but this is something else. (The bruising at the top of my genital area – from the surgery, which was quite blue – has now gone).
I called the new doctors surgery (well, new to me anyway) and got through just after 0830. Appointment given for 1020, with a nurse called Judi (they only had one doctor in today), and Caroline recognised the name. That did help to ease matters a little, now what I had to do was to explain things! I got ready to go out, and I was doing my email (as normal) on the PowerMac. The monitor back slipped down behind the desk, and fell over onto my fingers, which then projectiled the wireless keyboard! I heard a crack, and I thought it was my fingers – which got off with a bruising. Upon closer inspection, the support hinge (clear plastic) has cracked. Looks rescue-able. I don’t mind being called clumsy (even though the clumsiness has somehow dipped quite a bit since surgery), but it wasn’t me this time – it slipped back, not for the first time, and the hinge just couldn’t take any more. Naturally the post turned up just as I was getting ready to leave.
I walked to the surgery via a footpath – not quite the one in the OS Atlas, but it brought me out onto Burns Road near the Coombes Community Centre, and I was able to turn right to arrive there with a few minutes to spare! Because of the shortage mentioned above, I ended up getting seen at 1055, but this was understood in the circumstances. Especially when the person with black ticket number 6 was seen by one of the other nurses (to cut the waiting time), it meant I (number 7) was called in a few minutes later.
I walked in, briefly introduced myself, and started to explain. The post-op discharge letter was quite handy to explain all. A swab had to be taken, and J did her best to reassure me! That was ok, but the next bit was a little more difficult – a wee sample was needed. OK, just that now, I don’t quite have the directional tools that I did before, so a plastic cup was also supplied! It turned out to be irrelevant, as I’d gone just before leaving the flat. The empty bottle had a small amount of powder in it, which turned out to be Boric Acid (a preservative). Anyway, she gave me a prescription for Co-Amoxiclav 250/125 tablets (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid) after getting hold of Liz at Nuffield, and also a script for more Aquagel, Co-Dydramol and Hibiscrub. Left with thanks, to go back next week, and get my results next week when they come back from Addenbrooke’s.
I took my scripts next door to the chemist, and while the antibiotics were in stock, there was a problem with the Aquagel – apparently their wholesaler has discontinued it. I had to go to the bank agent in town anyway, so there was no problems in going to Boots. After taking the Town Service 16 bus to Kneesworth Street, went to Boots. Gel would need to be ordered, but the other two were fine. So they thought. Turns out the co-dydramol was no problem, but they’d given me a prescription for a 1% solution of the active ingredient in Hibiscrub – Hibiscrub itself is normally 4%, and the pharmacist said that is what she thought it was, as she’d not seen the 1% one for a while. So, they are both on order for me for tomorrow.
Managed to walk back from Royston town centre to the flat, and was ok when back home – a little worn, but no major problems for my first time out on my own since surgery.
